The Pastor's Letter |
I am dedicating the Pastor’s Letter to an explanation of part of the Rites of Christian Initiation. As director of
the RCIA, Gerard Scheuermann is best suited to explain what is going to take place.
On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, at the 8:45 Mass, the Church celebrates the “scrutinies,” rites that are meant to prepare those adults and older children for their full initiation into the Church at the
Easter Vigil. They are called “scrutinies” because the Elect are asked to search their lives for anything that
needs to be removed or changed before Baptism. The Church then prays over them and asks God to rid them of
all that may lead them away from Christ and into sin. This prayer is known as an Exorcism, that is, a call to God
to rid the person of any evil that may be affecting them. It’s a far cry from the movie version, but still a very
serious time in the Elect’s preparation.
Please keep our Elect in your Lenten prayers and sacrifices as they complete their journey to the waters of Baptism. |
