One of my favorite foods is fish.  I look forward to Lent since fish is more available in restaurants.  Avoiding eating meat is no hardship at all for me.  Would it be at all appropriate for someone like me to give up fish on Fridays and instead actually eat meat on Fridays as my "sacrifice"?   Or am I thinking way too far "out of the box"?  I have considered this for years, I feel it would be appropriate, but feel it would be awkward to explain to Catholic friends.

In addition to the days of fast & total abstinence, the Church asks us to sacrifice during Lent as a spiritual discipline. It's purpose is to remind us that our spiritual life is more important than the physical. We can "give up" something besides food, like gossip, laziness and replace it with reaching out, helping, being kind.
The purpose is to make us better followers of Jesus. For some, longing for a favorite food or snack helps remind them of the sacrifice Jesus made and so how we should sacrifice for others. Just follow the 3 disciplines of Lent, prayer, fasting & almsgiving, in whatever way helps you better follow Christ.
