We Catholics are a scriptural people, but if we are asked by non Catholics to defend our beliefs, creeds, and practices using biblical references, many of us I'm sorry to say would be unable to do an effective job of it. How can we respond?

Catholics do not use bible quotes to defend or prove anything. That is called "Proof Texting" and goes against our Church's view of how to use scripture. Give me a point and I can both support & oppose it using the bible.

As Catholics, we look for the message that God meant for the human author to transmit. This is personal and not to be used to tell anyone else what to do or not do. The Catholic approach to studying the Scriptures is to determine, using the best sources available, what was meant AT THE TIME IT WAS WRITTEN to the audience it was addressed to, in the language and expressions of the time. From this, we can apply lessons to our own life as Catholics. We do not take the bible literally or fundamentally.
